terrapin sugar bowl

A rare and possibly the only known silver mounted terrapin shell sugar bowl of the period.

Engraved with the arms of Charlotte Hanbury of Kelmarsh Hall, her father in law was a member of the Society of Antiquaries and noted collector who published papers such as one on exotic corals in 1741. Hallmarked a year after her husband’s death is possible the shell came from her farther in laws natural history collection.
