ANTONIO ABONDIO 1538–1591
Vienna 1575
Uniface medallion of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian II, dressed in armour draped in a cloak with the order of the Golden Fleece clearly visible hanging from his neck. Abondio first entered the employ of the Emperor in 1566. After his death and the succession of Rudolph II he travelled with the court to Prague. He specialised in wax portraiture which lends itself to the production of cast medallions such as this example.
