ETRUSCAN OINOCHOE

Mid 4th - early 3rd century bc.

The word Oinochoe deriveds from Ancient Greek; oînos, "wine" and chéō, "I pour". The function of these vessels was intermediary, wine (or other fluid) was transported in larger vessels such as amphorae, mixed in a bowl or krater and then transferred into oinochoai before finally being decanted into to drinking vessels at the table.

This beaked black glazed type 7 example has remnants of red line anthemion decoration. Etruscan, attributable to the Phantom Group.
