NEPLESE STUPA

Newar valley. 18th century

Nepalese cast bell metal vessel in the form of a stupa; intended to hold vermillion powder. The globular body supported by an inverted lotus leading to a flared foot. The 8 chatras of graduated size representing different levels of buddhas teaching incorporate a small bell which would be used on occasions of solemnity. The architectural form of this vessel is inspired by the ancient burial mounds and reliquaries found in the region.
