Footed bowl

Marmor tripotonicum

Probably Rome. 19th century.

Semi hemispherical footed bowl with moulded lip, turned in marmor triponticum (Lumachella antica). Favoured for use as flooring panels in public buildings and residences of high status in ancient Rome. Named marmor tripotonicum by the Romans as the site of the quarry is located between the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmora and Lake Sapanca, “Three Seas”. The location was lost in late antiquity and not rediscovered until 1990, suggesting this marble has been recycled from an ancient architectural element.
