GROUP OF CASTS
Plaster and pigment
Early 19th century
United Kingdom
Possibly the most interesting of these casts is the largest. Although the Spirals are opposing and conical it seems to relate to the Ammonite order, a style developed by the architect and artist George Dance, the younger, in the late 18th century.
Few buildings survive built in this order but one example is the house of architect, geologist and fossil collector Amon Wilds in Lewes. Although variations on the final formalised order, it’s possible these are evidence of early experimentation.
